William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was one of the most prominent and influential British statesmen of the 19th century. Born in Liverpool, he was the son of a wealthy merchant, John Gladstone. Gladstone’s political career spanned over 60 years, during which he served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom an unprecedented four times (1868-1874, 1880-1885, 1886, and 1892-1894).

Gladstone was a leading figure in the Liberal Party and a strong advocate for free trade, home rule for Ireland, and the extension of voting rights. He was known for his oratorical skills and his ability to win over audiences with his passionate speeches. His rivalry with Benjamin Disraeli, another prominent statesman and leader of the Conservative Party, was legendary and helped shape British politics in the Victorian era.

Throughout his life, Gladstone resided at several locations in London, including 11 Carlton House Terrace, where this plaque is located. The house, situated in the Borough of Westminster, was Gladstone’s home from 1856 to 1875. Westminster has long been associated with British politics, with the Houses of Parliament and many government offices located in the area. Living in this borough would have been convenient for Gladstone, allowing him to be close to the center of political power.
