Walter Bagehot was a renowned 19th-century British journalist, businessman, and essayist. Born in 1826 in Langport, Somerset, he went on to become one of the most influential writers of the Victorian era. Bagehot is best known for his works on politics, economics, and finance.

As a young man, Bagehot studied mathematics at University College London before beginning his career in banking. He joined his uncle’s shipping and banking business, eventually becoming a director of the Stuckey’s Banking Company. This experience in finance would later inform his insightful writings on economics.

Bagehot’s true passion, however, was writing. He became editor-in-chief of The Economist in 1861, a position he held until his death. Under his leadership, the magazine gained a reputation for its astute analysis of politics and economics. Bagehot’s most famous works include “The English Constitution” (1867), which explored the inner workings of British government, and “Lombard Street” (1873), a seminal treatise on banking and finance.

This blue plaque marks 12 Upper Belgrave Street in Westminster, where Bagehot lived for a time. The Borough of Westminster, in the heart of London, has been home to numerous influential figures throughout history. Its proximity to the seat of government at Westminster Palace made it a popular residential area for politicians, writers, and other notable individuals during the Victorian era.
