W. Somerset Maugham was a prolific English writer who made his mark on 20th-century literature as a novelist, playwright, and short story author. Born in 1874 in Paris, Maugham lost both of his parents at a young age and was raised by his uncle, the Vicar of Whitstable in Kent. He studied medicine at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, drawing upon his experiences to later pen vivid tales set in the medical world.

Maugham’s first novel, “Liza of Lambeth,” was published in 1897, but it was his later works like “Of Human Bondage” (1915), “The Moon and Sixpence” (1919), and “Cakes and Ale” (1930) that solidified his reputation as a masterful storyteller. He was also an accomplished playwright, with works like “Lady Frederick” (1912) and “Our Betters” (1917) gracing the London stage.

From 1911 to 1919, Maugham resided at 6 Chesterfield Street in the fashionable London district of Mayfair. It was during these years that he achieved widespread acclaim, frequenting the city’s vibrant literary circles. Today, this elegant townhouse bears a blue plaque honoring the years Maugham spent crafting some of his most enduring works in the heart of Westminster, London’s political and cultural center.

Maugham’s contributions to literature were recognized with a knighthood in 1954, and he was also made a Companion of Honour. His brilliant character studies, evocative prose, and keen observations of human nature continue to resonate with readers worldwide. Maugham passed away in 1965 at the age of 91, leaving behind an indelible literary legacy.
