Thomas Gage was a British general who played a significant role in the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. Born in 1721, Gage began his military career at a young age and rose through the ranks. In 1763, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of British forces in North America, tasked with enforcing the crown’s policies in the colonies.

As tensions mounted between the colonists and the British government, Gage found himself at the center of the growing conflict. He was responsible for implementing the unpopular Coercive Acts, which aimed to punish Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party. Gage’s attempts to seize colonial weapons and arrest rebel leaders ultimately led to the outbreak of war at Lexington and Concord in April 1775.

Despite his prominent role in the early days of the American Revolution, Gage was recalled to England in October 1775 due to his failure to quell the rebellion. He spent the remainder of his life in retirement, passing away in 1787 at the age of 66. The blue plaque at 41 Portland Place in Westminster commemorates Gage’s residence in London during his later years.
