Sir Stewart Duke-Elder was a pioneering British ophthalmologist who made significant contributions to the field of eye care in the 20th century. Born in 1898, he pursued a distinguished medical career, becoming a leading authority on diseases and disorders of the eye.

Duke-Elder lived and worked at 63 Harley Street in London’s Westminster borough from 1934 to 1976. Harley Street has long been renowned as a center of medical excellence in London, home to numerous prestigious physicians, surgeons and specialists.

Over his long career, Duke-Elder published prolifically, authoring over 50 textbooks and hundreds of scientific papers. His most famous work was the seven-volume “System of Ophthalmology”, still considered a seminal text in the field. He also served as Surgeon-Oculist to King Edward VIII, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, receiving knighthoods in recognition of his service.

In addition to his clinical and scholarly work, Duke-Elder played a key role in establishing ophthalmology as a distinct medical specialty in Britain. He helped found the Faculty of Ophthalmologists and the Institute of Ophthalmology in London, advancing research and education in eye care. The Institute’s library was later named in his honor.

Sir Stewart Duke-Elder’s legacy continues to inspire eye doctors around the world. His lifetime of dedication and achievement left an indelible mark on British medicine and on the countless patients who benefited from his expertise.
