Stanley Baldwin Earl Baldwin of Bewdley 1867-1947 Prime Minister lived here
Stanley Baldwin, 1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, was a prominent British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on three separate occasions between the two World Wars. Born in 1867, Baldwin was the son of Louisa Macdonald and Alfred Baldwin, a wealthy industrialist and Member of Parliament. He followed in his father’s footsteps, entering Parliament in 1908 as the MP for Bewdley.
Baldwin’s political career was marked by steady advancement. He served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury and President of the Board of Trade before being appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1922. The following year, he became Prime Minister for the first time, leading the country until 1924. He would return to the premiership twice more, from 1924 to 1929 and again from 1935 to 1937.
As Prime Minister, Baldwin navigated Britain through a period of significant domestic and international challenges. He oversaw the General Strike of 1926, the Abdication Crisis of 1936, and the early years of rearmament in the face of growing threats from Nazi Germany. Known for his steady and conciliatory leadership style, Baldwin sought to bridge societal divisions and maintain stability in a rapidly changing world. His famous phrase “Safety First” encapsulated his cautious approach.
After retiring from politics in 1937, Baldwin was elevated to the peerage as Earl Baldwin of Bewdley. He spent his retirement at Astley Hall in Worcestershire and passed away in 1947 at the age of 80. This plaque at 93 Eaton Square in London’s Borough of Westminster marks one of the residences associated with Baldwin during his long and distinguished political career in the heart of British government.
