Simón Bolívar was a towering figure in Latin American history, hailed as the “Liberator” for his pivotal role in freeing much of South America from Spanish rule in the early 19th century. Born into a wealthy family in Caracas, Venezuela in 1783, Bolívar lost both parents at a young age. He traveled to Europe as a young man, where his exposure to Enlightenment ideals would shape his political thinking and spark his dream of Latin American independence.

It was during Bolívar’s stay in London in 1810, lodging at 4 Duke Street in the Borough of Westminster, that he made key political connections and gained support for the revolutionary cause. He met with British officials and recruited volunteers, securing vital aid for the independence movements.

Returning to South America, Bolívar led a remarkable two-decade campaign, fighting over 100 battles and trailblazing his way through the jungles and over the Andes. His military genius and inspirational leadership were instrumental in liberating the present-day nations of Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama from the Spanish Empire. He served as the first president of Colombia and Bolivia, the latter named in his honor.
