Scotland Yard, the renowned headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service, has been an iconic institution in London for nearly two centuries. From 1829 to 1890, Scotland Yard’s first headquarters stood at this very site on Whitehall Place in Westminster.

When Sir Robert Peel established the Metropolitan Police in 1829, he chose 4 Whitehall Place as its central base of operations. The building, a private house at the time, backed onto a courtyard called Great Scotland Yard, from which the police force took its famous nickname. Over the next 61 years, Scotland Yard would coordinate law enforcement efforts across the rapidly expanding metropolis from this location.

As London grew in size and population during the 19th century, so too did the challenges facing the Metropolitan Police. Scotland Yard’s officers dealt with notorious crimes like the Jack the Ripper murders in 1888, all while pioneering modern investigative techniques and expanding the scope of policing. By 1890, the force had outgrown its Whitehall Place headquarters and moved to a larger building on the Victoria Embankment, and later to its current New Scotland Yard location. However, the “Scotland Yard” name has endured as a byword for London’s police to this day.

The historic Ministry of Agriculture Building now occupies the site where Scotland Yard’s first headquarters once stood. This blue plaque, installed in 1979, marks that fascinating chapter of Westminster’s history when this area was the nerve center of the London police. From these modest beginnings in Whitehall, Scotland Yard has become one of the world’s most famous law enforcement agencies.
