It was during his time in London, from 1812 to 1815, that Morse resided at 141 Cleveland Street in the Borough of Westminster. This elegant Georgian terraced house served as his home and studio, where he honed his artistic skills and made connections within the London art scene.

However, it was Morse’s fascination with the emerging field of electromagnetism that would ultimately define his legacy. In the 1830s, he began developing a practical telegraph system, culminating in the creation of the Morse Code. This ingenious code assigned a unique combination of dots and dashes to each letter of the alphabet, enabling messages to be transmitted quickly over long distances using electrical pulses. The first public demonstration of Morse’s telegraph took place in 1844, when he famously sent the message “What hath God wrought” from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore.
