Richard Cobden was a pioneering British politician, manufacturer, and campaigner who played a pivotal role in the fight for free trade in the 19th century. Born in 1804 in Sussex, Cobden became a successful calico printer and entrepreneur in Manchester. However, he is best remembered as a leading figure in the Anti-Corn Law League, which sought to abolish the protectionist Corn Laws that kept food prices artificially high.

Cobden’s tireless advocacy for free trade and his powerful oratory skills made him a nationally recognized figure. He argued that free trade would lower food costs, boost the economy, and promote international peace. His efforts were instrumental in the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846, a landmark victory for his cause. Cobden also negotiated the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty in 1860, a free trade agreement between Britain and France that helped reduce trade barriers across Europe.

Beyond his economic reforms, Cobden was a committed pacifist who opposed British military interventions abroad. He believed that free trade and international cooperation were the keys to global peace and prosperity. Cobden spent his final years at his London residence, 23 Suffolk Street in Westminster, where he passed away in 1865 at the age of 61. This blue plaque, erected in 1905, marks the place where one of Britain’s most influential and principled political figures lived out his last days. Cobden’s legacy as a champion of free trade, peace, and reform continues to inspire to this day.
