Percy Bysshe Shelley was one of the most influential English Romantic poets of the early 19th century. Born in 1792, he grew up in a wealthy aristocratic family but rebelled against the conventions of his time. Shelley was a passionate advocate for social and political reform, as well as a vegetarian and atheist, which made him a controversial figure in conservative British society.

Despite facing ostracism and censorship, Shelley produced an impressive body of work in his short life. Some of his most famous poems include “Ozymandias,” “Ode to the West Wind,” and “Prometheus Unbound.” He was part of a circle of notable writers and intellectuals, including his close friend Lord Byron and his second wife, Mary Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein.”

In 1811, at the age of 18, Shelley lived here at 15 Poland Street in London’s Soho district. The building, located in the City of Westminster, was Shelley’s residence during a tumultuous period in his life. He had recently been expelled from Oxford University for publishing a pamphlet titled “The Necessity of Atheism.” This early incident showcased Shelley’s rebellious spirit and commitment to challenging the status quo, traits that would define his life and work.

Tragically, Shelley’s life was cut short in 1822 at the age of 29. He drowned in a boating accident off the coast of Italy, where he had been living in self-imposed exile due to his radical political views and unconventional personal life. Despite his untimely death, Shelley’s legacy as a visionary poet and thinker has endured. Today, he is celebrated as one of the greatest lyric poets in the English language, and his ideas continue to inspire new generations of writers and activists.
