Sir Michael Costa was a renowned Italian-born British conductor and composer who played a pivotal role in reforming orchestral music in England during the 19th century. Born in Naples in 1808, Costa moved to England in 1829 and quickly established himself as a leading figure in the musical world.
Costa served as the conductor of the Italian Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 1830 to 1846, where he introduced many important reforms to improve the quality and professionalism of orchestral performances. He was known for his strict discipline and high standards, insisting on numerous rehearsals and meticulous attention to detail. Costa’s innovations included the use of a baton to conduct, which was a relatively new practice at the time.
In addition to his work at the Italian Opera, Costa was also the conductor of the Philharmonic Society from 1846 to 1854, and the conductor of the Handel Festivals at the Crystal Palace from 1857 to 1880. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1869 in recognition of his contributions to music. Costa lived at 59 Eccleston Square in London’s Borough of Westminster from 1857 until his death in 1884. The borough has a rich musical history and is home to many prestigious cultural institutions, including the Royal Albert Hall and the Cadogan Hall.
Throughout his career, Costa composed several operas and ballets, as well as numerous orchestral and choral works. His most famous composition is the oratorio “Eli,” which premiered in 1855. Costa’s legacy lives on through his music and the lasting impact he had on the development of orchestral music in England. His dedication, innovation, and passion for his craft helped to elevate the status of conductors and establish the orchestra as a serious and respected musical institution.
