Some of his most famous works include “Dover Beach,” “The Scholar-Gipsy,” and “Thyrsis.”

In addition to his poetic achievements, Arnold was a prominent literary and social critic. His essays, such as “Culture and Anarchy” and “The Function of Criticism at the Present Time,” explored the role of culture and education in society. He advocated for a broad, liberal education that would cultivate the intellect and moral character of individuals.

From 1851 to 1886, Arnold worked as an inspector of schools, a position that allowed him to travel extensively throughout England. He lived at 2 Chester Square in London’s Borough of Westminster, an area known for its elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture. The house, now marked with a blue plaque erected in 1954, served as Arnold’s residence during his later years.

Throughout his life, Arnold maintained close ties with the literary world. He was the uncle of novelist Mary Augusta Ward, who gained fame under her married name, Mrs. Humphry Ward. Today, Matthew Arnold is remembered as one of the most influential figures of the Victorian era, whose works continue to resonate with readers and scholars alike.
