Dame Marie Tempest was a renowned English actress and singer who captivated audiences in London’s West End and on Broadway in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born Mary Susan Etherington in London in 1864, she adopted the stage name Marie Tempest and made her theatrical debut in 1885. Her talent and charm quickly propelled her to stardom.

Tempest’s career spanned over five decades, during which she showcased her versatility in a wide range of roles, from light comedy to serious drama. She was particularly celebrated for her performances in musical comedies, where her beautiful singing voice and comedic timing shone. Some of her most notable stage appearances include “Dorothy” (1887), “The Red Hussar” (1889), and “The Marriage of Kitty” (1902).

In 1937, Tempest was made a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her contributions to the arts. She lived at 24 Park Crescent in Westminster from 1899 to 1902, during the height of her career. The Borough of Westminster, in the heart of London, has long been associated with the arts and is home to many of the city’s most iconic theatres and cultural institutions.

Dame Marie Tempest continued to perform well into her 70s, a testament to her enduring talent and passion for the stage.
