Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, later known as Napoleon III, was the Emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870. Born in 1808, he was the son of Louis Bonaparte, brother of the famous Napoleon I, and Hortense de Beauharnais, stepdaughter of Napoleon I. As a member of the Bonaparte dynasty, Louis-Napoléon spent much of his early life in exile, including a period in London where he lived at 1c King Street in St James’s, Westminster.

During his time in London, Louis-Napoléon immersed himself in the study of politics and economics, laying the foundation for his future reign as Emperor. He also cultivated relationships with influential figures in British society, which would later prove valuable in his political career.

After a series of failed attempts to seize power in France, Louis-Napoléon finally succeeded in 1848, becoming the first President of the French Second Republic. In 1852, he orchestrated a coup d’état and declared himself Emperor Napoleon III. As Emperor, he embarked on a series of ambitious projects, including the modernization of Paris, the expansion of the French railway system, and the promotion of industrial development. He also led France into the Crimean War and the Franco-Prussian War, the latter of which ultimately led to his downfall and exile to England, where he died in 1873.
