Karl Marx was a hugely influential German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and socialist revolutionary. Born in 1818 in Trier, Germany, he is best known as the father of modern communism. Marx developed theories about society, economics and politics, arguing that capitalism would inevitably produce internal tensions leading to its demise and replacement by a socialist system.

From 1851 to 1856, Marx lived with his wife and children at 28 Dean Street in London’s Soho district, where this commemorative plaque is located. During his time in London, he conducted research that led to groundbreaking works such as ‘Das Kapital’, which laid out his theories on the capitalist mode of production. He also cultivated his revolutionary socialist politics as a member of organizations like the Communist League.

Marx’s ideas went on to influence many subsequent intellectuals and political movements. His theories formed the basis of Marxism and served as a foundation for the socialist and communist revolutions of the 20th century in countries like Russia, China and Cuba.
