Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (1819-1891) was a renowned British civil engineer best known for his groundbreaking work on London’s sewer system in the mid-19th century. Born in London, Bazalgette began his career working on railway projects before being appointed chief engineer of the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1856.

In this role, Bazalgette faced the immense challenge of addressing London’s severe public health crisis caused by inadequate sewage and drainage infrastructure. He designed and oversaw the construction of an extensive network of underground brick sewers, pumping stations, and embankments along the River Thames. This monumental engineering feat, completed in 1875, significantly improved sanitation and helped to prevent cholera outbreaks in the city.

Bazalgette’s design was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, with ornate iron work and grand pumping stations that have become iconic landmarks in London. His legacy extends beyond the sewer system, as he also played a key role in the creation of the Thames Embankment, the Albert Embankment, and several notable bridges, including the Hammersmith Bridge and Putney Bridge.

For his exceptional contributions to public health and engineering, Bazalgette was knighted in 1874, becoming Sir Joseph Bazalgette. He lived at 17 Hamilton Terrace in St John’s Wood, Westminster, where this blue plaque was erected in 1974 to commemorate his life and achievements. The Borough of Westminster, home to many of London’s most famous landmarks and institutions, is a fitting location to honor this pioneering engineer whose work had such a profound impact on the city and its inhabitants.
