Jomo Kenyatta, born around 1894, was a pivotal figure in Kenya’s struggle for independence and became the country’s first President. He lived at 95 Cambridge Street in London from 1933 to 1937 while studying anthropology at the London School of Economics. During this time, Kenyatta became involved in the Pan-African movement and began advocating for Kenyan independence from British colonial rule.

Kenyatta returned to Kenya in 1946 and became a prominent leader in the Kenya African Union. He was imprisoned by the British authorities from 1952 to 1961 for his alleged involvement in the Mau Mau Uprising, although his actual role remains disputed. Upon his release, Kenyatta continued his political activism and played a key role in negotiating Kenya’s independence, which was achieved in 1963.

As the first President of the Republic of Kenya from 1964 until his death in 1978, Kenyatta worked to unite the nation and promote economic development. He advocated for a mixed economy, attracting foreign investment while also supporting social welfare programs. Although his presidency was not without controversy, Kenyatta is widely regarded as the founding father of modern Kenya.

The Borough of Westminster, where Kenyatta resided during his time in London, has been home to numerous influential figures throughout history. The area is known for its iconic landmarks, such as the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, and has long been at the heart of British politics and culture.
