John Stuart Mill was a renowned British philosopher, political economist, and civil servant who made significant contributions to modern social and political theory. Born in 1806 in London, he was the eldest son of James Mill, a prominent Scottish historian and philosopher. Mill was raised according to his father’s rigorous educational beliefs and was a child prodigy, learning Greek at age 3 and Latin at 8.

Mill worked for the British East India Company, following in his father’s footsteps. He authored influential works including “A System of Logic” (1843), “Principles of Political Economy” (1848), “On Liberty” (1859), and “Utilitarianism” (1863). In “On Liberty,” he passionately argued for the importance of individual rights and freedom of expression. Mill was also an early advocate of women’s rights.

From 1814 to 1831, Mill lived with his father James at 40 Queen Anne’s Gate in Westminster. This historic borough in central London has been home to the UK Parliament and many of Britain’s most influential figures. After his father’s death in 1836, Mill purchased a house in Kensington where he lived until his own passing in 1873. A prolific writer and original thinker, Mill left a lasting imprint on liberalism and modern intellectual discourse.

Fun fact: Mill was an avid botanist in his leisure time and extensively studied the flora of southern Europe. He was a founder and longtime president of the Botanical Society of London.
