Born in 1814 in Dublin, Ireland, Godley was educated at Harrow School and Christ Church, Oxford. After completing his studies, he pursued a career in colonial administration.

In the late 1840s, Godley became actively involved in the colonization of New Zealand. He was a leading figure in the Canterbury Association, an organization formed to establish a Church of England settlement in the colony. Godley worked tirelessly to promote the project, securing funding and recruiting settlers for the new colony.

In 1850, the first ships carrying settlers to Canterbury set sail from England. Godley himself traveled to New Zealand to oversee the establishment of the settlement. He served as the first Superintendent of Canterbury from 1853 to 1857, playing a crucial role in shaping the early development of the colony. Under his leadership, Christchurch was founded and grew into a thriving town. Godley’s vision and dedication were instrumental in the success of the Canterbury settlement.

After his time in New Zealand, Godley returned to England. He lived at 48 Gloucester Place in the Borough of Westminster, London, until his death in 1861 at the age of 47. The blue plaque at this address commemorates his life and contributions as the founder of Canterbury, New Zealand. Godley’s legacy lives on in the vibrant city of Christchurch and the surrounding region, which continue to thrive as a testament to his vision and leadership.
