John Inman was a beloved English comedy actor best known for his role as Mr. Humphries in the popular BBC sitcom “Are You Being Served?” (1972-1985). Born in 1935 in Preston, Lancashire, Inman discovered his passion for acting at a young age and began his career in the theatre. He honed his craft in various stage productions before landing his breakthrough television role.

As the campy and flamboyant sales assistant Mr. Humphries, Inman became a household name and a gay icon. His catchphrase, “I’m free!”, became synonymous with the character and was often imitated by fans. Inman’s portrayal of Mr. Humphries showcased his impeccable comic timing and ability to steal scenes with his witty one-liners and physical comedy.

Beyond his acting career, Inman was a prominent member of the show business charity fraternity, the Grand Order of Water Rats. He was honored with the title of “King Rat” in 1999, recognizing his significant contributions to the entertainment industry and his charitable work. Inman resided at 4 Roberts Close in the Borough of Westminster, London, where he lived until his death in 2007 at the age of 71. The blue plaque commemorating his life and career was unveiled at this address in 2008, serving as a lasting tribute to one of Britain’s most cherished comedy actors.
