John Arbuthnot Fisher, more commonly known as Jackie Fisher, was a British naval officer who served as First Sea Lord, the professional head of the Royal Navy, from 1904 to 1910. Born in Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) in 1841, Fisher joined the Navy at the age of 13 and quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a brilliant and innovative leader.

During his tenure as First Sea Lord, Fisher implemented sweeping reforms that modernized the Royal Navy and prepared it for the challenges of the 20th century. He was a driving force behind the development of the Dreadnought-class battleship, which revolutionized naval warfare, and he also championed the use of submarines and torpedoes.

Fisher’s achievements earned him numerous honors, including being appointed Admiral of the Fleet in 1905 and being made Baron Fisher in 1909. He was also a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, and a recipient of the Order of Merit. Fisher lived at 16 Queen Anne’s Gate, located in the Borough of Westminster, during his time as First Sea Lord. This elegant Georgian townhouse is situated in a historic area of London, close to St. James’s Park and Buckingham Palace.

After retiring in 1910, Fisher was recalled to service at the outbreak of World War I, serving again as First Sea Lord from 1914 to 1915. He died in 1920 at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential naval figures in British history. The blue plaque at his former residence serves as a tribute to his remarkable life and career.
