About This Blue Plaque

John Burgoyne was a British Army officer and politician who served in the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolutionary War. Born in 1722 to an aristocratic family, Burgoyne pursued a military career from a young age. He saw action during the Seven Years’ War, participating in several key battles including the Siege of Quebec in 1759.

Burgoyne is perhaps best known for his role in the American Revolutionary War. In 1777, he launched an ambitious campaign to split the American colonies along the Hudson River valley. Despite initial success, his forces were ultimately surrounded and forced to surrender at the Battle of Saratoga, a major turning point in the war. This defeat was a humiliating blow to Burgoyne’s reputation.

After the war, Burgoyne returned to England and served in Parliament. He was also a noted playwright, penning several popular satirical comedies. In his later years, he lived at 10 Hertford Street in the fashionable Mayfair district of Westminster. This elegant townhouse would have been a fitting residence for a gentleman of Burgoyne’s station. He passed away here in 1792 at the age of 70. Today, a blue plaque marks this as the site of Burgoyne’s final home, memorializing the storied and somewhat controversial legacy of this key figure in 18th century British military and political history.
