Fleming is best known for inventing the first thermionic valve or vacuum tube in 1904, a breakthrough that paved the way for the development of radio, television, and early computer technology. His invention, called the “Fleming Valve,” functioned as a diode, allowing electric current to flow in only one direction. This groundbreaking device was a critical component in the evolution of electronics.

In addition to his pioneering work on the vacuum tube, Fleming made numerous other contributions to the field of electrical engineering. He was a key figure in the development of wireless telegraphy, working closely with Guglielmo Marconi. Fleming also conducted important research on alternating current, high-frequency phenomena, and photoelectric cells. Throughout his career, he held teaching positions at several institutions, including the University of Nottingham and University College London, where he inspired and mentored future generations of scientists and engineers.

Fleming resided at 9 Clifton Gardens in the Maida Vale neighborhood of Westminster, London, for many years until his death in 1945 at the age of 95. The historic blue plaque marking his former home was unveiled in 1971, commemorating his life and achievements.
