James Watson is best known as one of the discoverers of the double helix structure of DNA, which revolutionized our understanding of how genetic information is stored and passed on. Along with Francis Crick, Watson determined the twisted ladder shape of the DNA molecule in 1953. This groundbreaking discovery earned them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962.

Born in Chicago in 1928, Watson studied zoology at the University of Chicago before pursuing his PhD at Indiana University. He later did postdoctoral research at the University of Copenhagen, where he first became interested in the structure of DNA. His collaboration with Crick at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge led to their seminal discovery.

From 1983 to 1992, during the latter part of his scientific career, Watson lived at 18 Vincent Square in London’s Borough of Westminster. Westminster is known for its rich history and iconic landmarks like Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. It has been home to many influential figures over the centuries.

Watson’s other notable achievements include serving as the director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, leading the Human Genome Project, and authoring the bestselling book “The Double Helix.” However, some of his later views on race and genetics proved highly controversial. Nonetheless, his contributions to molecular biology and genetics remain among the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century.
