Sir James Matthew Barrie, born in 1860 in Scotland, was a renowned novelist and playwright best known as the creator of Peter Pan. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, Barrie moved to London to pursue a career in journalism and writing. It was here that he penned some of his most famous works, including “The Little White Bird” which introduced the character of Peter Pan.

In 1904, Barrie premiered the stage play “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up” at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London. The play was an instant success and solidified Barrie’s reputation as a masterful storyteller. He continued to write novels and plays throughout his career, often exploring themes of childhood, imagination, and the bittersweet nature of growing up.

Barrie resided at 100 Bayswater Road in Westminster from 1902 until his death in 1937. During this time, he was made a baronet, adopting the title Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet Barrie of Adelphi Terrace in the City of Westminster. In 1922, he was appointed to the Order of Merit, a prestigious honor bestowed by the British monarch. Westminster, where Barrie lived for much of his adult life, has long been a hub for the arts and literature in London. Many famous writers, poets, and dramatists have called this borough home over the centuries.

Today, Barrie’s legacy endures through countless adaptations of Peter Pan in literature, stage productions, and films. His timeless tale of the boy who wouldn’t grow up continues to capture the imaginations of children and adults alike around the world. The blue plaque at 100 Bayswater Road, erected in 1961, serves as a tribute to the life and work of this remarkable writer who left an indelible mark on English literature.
