Ian Fleming was the renowned British author who created the iconic spy character James Bond. Born in 1908 in London, Fleming was the son of Valentine Fleming, a Member of Parliament. After being educated at Eton College and Sandhurst military academy, Fleming worked as a journalist and later as a naval intelligence officer during World War II.

It was Fleming’s wartime experiences that inspired him to write the James Bond novels, drawing upon his knowledge of espionage and military operations. Beginning with “Casino Royale” in 1953, Fleming wrote 12 Bond novels and 2 short story collections. The hugely popular books were adapted into one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, captivating audiences with their thrilling plots, exotic locales, and suave secret agent protagonist.

Fleming wrote all his Bond stories at Goldeneye, his estate in Jamaica. But when in London, he resided at 22 Ebury Street in the Borough of Westminster. This elegant townhouse, where Fleming lived from 1934 until 1945, is where the English Heritage blue plaque now commemorates the celebrated author. Westminster, in the heart of London, is a fitting location to honor Fleming. The borough is home to famous landmarks, government institutions, and in the Bond novels, offices of the British Secret Service where 007 would receive his mission briefings.

Sadly, Fleming’s life was cut short by a heart attack in 1964 at age 56. However, his legacy lives on through the enduring popularity of Bond. The 007 novels have sold over 100 million copies worldwide and the films have grossed billions of dollars. Fleming’s creation has not only entertained generations but has left an indelible mark on popular culture. From “shaken, not stirred” martinis to high-tech gadgets and fast cars, Bond has become a global phenomenon – all springing from the imagination of the man who once lived at this London address.
