Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, was one of Britain’s most celebrated naval commanders. Born in 1758, he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 12 and quickly rose through the ranks. Nelson played a crucial role in several decisive battles during the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of the Nile in 1798 and the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801.

Nelson’s most famous victory came at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where he led the British fleet to a resounding triumph over the combined forces of the French and Spanish navies. His tactical brilliance and bold leadership style inspired his men and cemented his status as a national hero. Tragically, Nelson was mortally wounded during the battle and died on the deck of his flagship, HMS Victory.

Throughout his career, Nelson earned numerous accolades and titles, including Baron Nelson of the Nile and Burnham Thorpe, Viscount Nelson of the Nile and of Burnham Thorpe, and Duke of Bronte in the Kingdom of Sicily. He was also made a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath. In 1798, Nelson lived at 103 New Bond Street in Westminster, London, the location commemorated by this blue plaque. The plaque, erected in 1958, serves as a reminder of Nelson’s enduring legacy and his connection to the Borough of Westminster, an area steeped in British history and home to many iconic landmarks.
