Henry Pelham served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1743 until his death in 1754. Born into a prominent political family, Pelham was educated at Oxford and quickly rose through the ranks of government. He assumed the premiership during the War of the Austrian Succession, successfully negotiating an end to the conflict with the 1748 Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle.

As Prime Minister, Pelham was known for his adept handling of finances and efforts to reduce the national debt. He worked to lower interest rates and successfully passed the Consolidation Act of 1751, which restructured government debt. Pelham was also a strong supporter of the “Old System” of Whig domination in Parliament.

Pelham resided at 22 Arlington Street in Westminster during his tenure as Prime Minister. The house, located near St. James’s Park and Green Park, was a convenient base for Pelham given its proximity to Parliament and royal residences. Westminster has long been the seat of British government and home to many influential political figures.

Recognized as a skilled politician and effective Prime Minister, Pelham was honored as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1744 for his support of the sciences. His legacy was somewhat overshadowed by his charismatic brother and successor, the Duke of Newcastle, but Pelham played a crucial role in mid-18th century British politics. This blue plaque, installed in 1995, commemorates Pelham’s life and time at this Westminster address.
