Henry John Temple, better known as Lord Palmerston, was a towering figure in 19th century British politics. Born in 1784, he served twice as Prime Minister and held various other high offices during a political career that spanned over 60 years.

As a young man, Palmerston entered Parliament in 1807. He soon made his mark, serving as Secretary at War from 1809 to 1828. In this role, he oversaw the conduct of the Peninsular War and established a reputation as an able administrator. Palmerston later served as Foreign Secretary for most of the period from 1830 to 1851, where he was known for his aggressive and interventionist policies. His support for nationalist movements abroad earned him the nickname “Lord Firebrand”.

Palmerston finally became Prime Minister in 1855 at the age of 70. He led the country during the Crimean War and oversaw a period of relative prosperity and stability. His second term as Prime Minister began in 1859 and coincided with events like the American Civil War. Palmerston was in power until his death in 1865 at the age of 80. A charismatic figure known for his wit and charm, he dominated British politics at the height of the country’s imperial power.

Located in Westminster, 4 Carlton Gardens served as Palmerston’s London residence during much of his political career. Many important political decisions would have been made within these walls as Palmerston met with fellow statesmen. The house stands in one of London’s most prestigious neighborhoods, close to Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. Palmerston likely chose this location for its proximity to the centers of power in Victorian London.
