Palmerston’s political career spanned an impressive six decades. He first entered Parliament in 1807 as a Tory MP. However, he later joined the Whig party and served as Foreign Secretary for much of the 1830s and 1840s. In this role, Palmerston was instrumental in shaping British foreign policy, advocating for a strong, assertive Britain on the global stage. His tenure saw Britain intervene in conflicts such as the First Opium War and the Crimean War.

In 1855, at the age of 70, Palmerston became Prime Minister for the first time. He led Britain during the final months of the Crimean War, securing favorable terms in the Treaty of Paris. Palmerston served a second term as Prime Minister from 1859 until his death in 1865 at the age of 80. Known for his wit, charm, and political acumen, Palmerston was a popular figure both in Parliament and with the British public. His assertive foreign policy, encapsulated by the phrase “gunboat diplomacy,” helped cement Britain’s status as a global superpower in the Victorian era.

Throughout his life, Palmerston received numerous honors, including being made a Knight of the Garter and a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. He was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in recognition of his intellectual pursuits. Today, Lord Palmerston is remembered as one of the most influential British statesmen of the 19th century, leaving an indelible mark on British politics and foreign policy.
