Born in Massachusetts in 1795, Peabody started his career in business at a young age and quickly demonstrated a talent for finance.

In 1837, Peabody moved to London, where he established George Peabody & Co., a successful banking firm that specialized in foreign exchange and American securities. His business acumen and integrity earned him a reputation as a leading figure in the financial world. Peabody’s success allowed him to amass a substantial fortune, which he used to support various charitable causes.

Peabody’s philanthropic efforts were particularly focused on improving education and housing for the working class. In the United States, he established the Peabody Education Fund, which provided support for education in the South after the American Civil War. In London, he founded the Peabody Trust, an organization dedicated to providing affordable housing for the city’s poor. The trust built numerous housing estates, known as Peabody Estates, which offered decent living conditions to thousands of Londoners. Peabody died at his home at 80 Eaton Square, Westminster, in 1869. His legacy continues to this day through the ongoing work of the Peabody Trust and the numerous educational institutions that bear his name.
