George Frampton was a renowned British sculptor active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1860, Frampton studied at the Royal Academy Schools and went on to become a leading figure in the New Sculpture movement. This artistic style, which emerged in the 1870s, sought to revitalize British sculpture with a renewed emphasis on naturalism and symbolism.

Frampton’s works often featured allegorical and mythological themes, executed with great technical skill and attention to detail. Some of his most celebrated sculptures include the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens (1912) and the Edith Cavell Memorial in London (1920). He also created numerous architectural sculptures, such as those adorning the façade of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

From 1894 to 1908, Frampton lived and worked at 32 Queen’s Grove in St John’s Wood, Westminster. This leafy residential area in northwest London has long been associated with the arts, home to many notable painters, sculptors, and musicians over the years. During his time here, Frampton would have been at the height of his career, producing some of his most iconic works.

Frampton’s contributions to British art were widely recognized in his lifetime. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1902 and knighted in 1908 for his services to sculpture. Today, his legacy lives on through the many public sculptures and memorials that grace London’s streets and parks, testaments to his enduring artistic vision and skill. The blue plaque at his former Queen’s Grove studio, erected in 1977, serves as a reminder of the significant role he played in shaping the course of British sculpture in the early modern era.
