Sir George Cayley, often referred to as the “father of aeronautics,” was a pioneering English engineer, inventor, and aviator who lived from 1773 to 1857. He made significant contributions to the understanding of aerodynamics and laid the foundations for modern aviation. Cayley was born into a wealthy family and held the title of 6th Baronet Cayley of Brompton.

Throughout his life, Cayley conducted extensive research and experiments related to flight. He was the first to identify the four fundamental forces of flight: lift, drag, thrust, and weight. In 1799, he designed a glider that incorporated these principles, featuring a fixed-wing design and separate systems for lift, propulsion, and control. This groundbreaking concept became the basis for future aircraft designs.

Cayley’s contributions extended beyond theoretical work. He also built and tested various model gliders and full-size gliders, including the first recorded manned glider flight in 1853. His innovative designs included the use of a rudder for steering and a movable tail for pitch control. In addition to his aviation work, Cayley made advancements in other fields such as the self-righting lifeboat and the tension-spoke wheel.
