Sir Frederick Treves (1853-1923) was a renowned British surgeon who made significant contributions to the field of medicine during his illustrious career. Born in Dorchester, Dorset, Treves studied medicine at the London Hospital Medical College before being appointed as a surgeon at the London Hospital in 1884.

Treves gained worldwide recognition for his pioneering work in abdominal surgery, particularly in the treatment of appendicitis. He is credited with performing the first successful appendectomy in England in 1888. Treves also made notable advancements in the surgical treatment of peritonitis and other abdominal conditions.

Beyond his medical achievements, Treves is perhaps best known for his friendship with Joseph Merrick, also known as the “Elephant Man.” Merrick suffered from severe deformities and was exhibited as a sideshow attraction before Treves took him under his care at the London Hospital. Treves provided Merrick with a home and treated him with compassion and dignity until Merrick’s death in 1890.

Treves lived at 6 Wimpole Street in Westminster, London, from 1886 to 1907. During this time, he was appointed as Surgeon Extraordinary to Queen Victoria and later as Surgeon in Ordinary to King Edward VII. In recognition of his service to the Royal Family and his contributions to medicine, Treves was knighted in 1901 and made a Baronet in 1902.
