Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), was a renowned British soldier and one of the most successful commanders of the Victorian era. Born in India, Roberts joined the British Army at a young age and quickly distinguished himself through his bravery and tactical prowess. He played a pivotal role in numerous military campaigns, including the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Second Anglo-Afghan War, and the Second Boer War.

Throughout his illustrious career, Roberts received many prestigious honors and decorations. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British and Commonwealth armed forces, for his gallantry during the Indian Rebellion. Roberts also held the ranks of Field Marshal and was a recipient of the Order of Merit, a distinction reserved for those who have rendered exceptionally meritorious service in the armed forces or in the fields of science, art, literature, or the promotion of culture.

As a respected military leader and strategist, Roberts served as the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the position was abolished in 1904. He was also a Knight of the Order of the Garter, Knight Grand Commander of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire, and held many other titles that recognized his outstanding contributions to the British Empire. Roberts lived at 47 Portland Place in Westminster, London, which is now marked by a blue plaque erected in 1922, commemorating his remarkable life and achievements.
