Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was a renowned English novelist and Royal Navy officer whose adventurous life at sea provided inspiration for his popular maritime stories. Born in London, Marryat joined the Royal Navy at the young age of 14. He quickly proved his bravery and skill, rising through the ranks to become a Captain by age 31.

During his naval career, Marryat saw action in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. He commanded the 24-gun HMS Larne, assisting in the capture of Rangoon during the First Anglo-Burmese War. These daring exploits and his firsthand knowledge of life aboard 19th-century naval vessels would later infuse his novels with vivid detail and authenticity.

In the 1830s, Marryat took up the pen and embarked on a second career as a novelist. His most famous works include “Mr Midshipman Easy” (1836), “Peter Simple” (1834), and “Jacob Faithful” (1834). These rollicking tales of high-seas adventure, featuring memorable characters like the eponymous Midshipman Easy, captivated readers of all ages. Marryat’s literary contributions secured his place as a key figure in the development of the sea story as a distinct genre.
