About This Blue Plaque

Sir Frederick Handley Page (1885-1962) was a pioneering English aircraft designer and manufacturer. He founded Handley Page Limited, which became a major British aircraft manufacturer and produced innovative designs that helped shape early aviation.

Born in Cheltenham, Handley Page studied at London’s East London Technical College (now known as Queen Mary University of London). In 1909, he established his aircraft manufacturing company, initially operating from a small office space in London.

Handley Page’s company specialized in heavy bombers, producing planes like the O/400 used by the Royal Air Force during World War I. Later, his Halifax bomber played a crucial role in World War II. Handley Page also developed innovative civilian aircraft, including the H.P.42, one of the largest airliners of its time. He received a knighthood in 1942 for his significant contributions to aviation.

This blue plaque marks Flat 3 at 18 Grosvenor Square, located in the prestigious Mayfair area of Westminster, where Sir Frederick Handley Page once resided. Grosvenor Square has long been associated with notable figures, diplomats, and the wealthy elite, with many of its grand properties serving as residences and embassies. The plaque’s presence here highlights Handley Page’s status and success in his field.
