Francisco de Miranda was a Venezuelan military leader and revolutionary who played a significant role in the struggle for Latin American independence from Spain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Caracas in 1750, Miranda was a man of many talents – a soldier, diplomat, writer, and political thinker. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, meeting with influential figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Miranda lived at 58 Grafton Way in London from 1802 to 1810, during a period of exile from his homeland. It was here in the British capital that he worked tirelessly to drum up support for the cause of Latin American independence. He founded the London-based “Sociedad de Lautaro”, a secret society dedicated to liberating the Spanish colonies in the New World.

In 1810, Miranda led an expedition to his native Venezuela to launch a revolution against Spanish rule. Though this initial attempt failed, it helped spark the broader struggle for independence across Latin America. Miranda was eventually captured by the Spanish in 1812 and died in prison in Cadiz, Spain in 1816. Despite the tragic end to his life, Miranda’s ideas and activism laid important groundwork for the wave of revolutionary movements that ultimately brought an end to colonial rule in much of the Western Hemisphere.

Today, Miranda is remembered as a visionary and a hero in many Latin American countries. This plaque, erected in 1996 in London’s Fitzrovia neighborhood, commemorates the years that this important historical figure spent in the British capital, striving for the liberation of his homeland from afar. It’s a reminder of London’s long history as a hub of political activism and a refuge for revolutionaries from around the world.
