Lord FitzRoy Somerset Raglan, 1st Baron Raglan, was a distinguished British military commander and politician, best known for his role as the Commander-in-Chief during the Crimean War (1853-1856). Born in 1788, Somerset was the youngest son of Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort. He embarked on a military career at a young age, serving in the Peninsular War and later as the military secretary to the Duke of Wellington.

Somerset’s political career saw him serve as a Member of Parliament for Truro from 1818 to 1820 and for Bramber from 1820 to 1826. He was also appointed as a Privy Counsellor and was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in recognition of his service.

In 1854, at the age of 66, Lord Raglan was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the British troops in the Crimean War. Despite his extensive military experience, the campaign proved to be a challenging one, with the British forces facing significant logistical and tactical difficulties. The war took a toll on Raglan’s health, and he died of dysentery in June 1855 while still in Crimea. His death was a significant blow to the British war effort, and he was posthumously honored for his service.
