Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was one of the most prominent English poets of the Victorian era. Born into a wealthy family, she was educated at home and began writing poetry at a young age. Despite struggling with chronic illness and a domineering father, Elizabeth developed her craft and gained recognition for her work, especially her poem “How Do I Love Thee?” from the collection “Sonnets from the Portuguese.”

In 1846, Elizabeth eloped with fellow poet Robert Browning, defying her father’s disapproval. The couple moved to Italy, where Elizabeth found inspiration and improved health. They had one son, Robert Barrett Browning. Elizabeth continued to write prolifically, exploring themes of love, politics, and social justice. Her works, such as the verse novel “Aurora Leigh,” were immensely popular in England and the United States.

The building at 99 Gloucester Place, located in London’s Borough of Westminster, was once Elizabeth’s family home. She lived here with her parents and siblings from 1835 to 1846. It was during this time that she exchanged letters with Robert Browning, which led to their courtship and marriage. The Borough of Westminster, known for its historic landmarks and cultural institutions, provided a fitting backdrop for Elizabeth’s literary pursuits.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s legacy extends far beyond her romantic poetry. She was an advocate for social reforms, including the abolition of slavery and improved rights for women. Her works continue to inspire readers and scholars alike, cementing her place as one of the most influential poets of her time. This plaque, erected in 1924, serves as a tribute to her enduring contributions to literature and society.
