Edward Smith-Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on three separate occasions in the mid-19th century. Throughout his political career, Lord Derby held various high offices, including Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, and Leader of the Opposition. He first became Prime Minister in 1852, albeit briefly, and returned to the office in 1858-1859 and 1866-1868. During his tenures, he grappled with significant issues such as parliamentary reform and the American Civil War.

As a resident of 10 St James’s Square, known today as Chatham House, Lord Derby shared this address with two other notable Prime Ministers: William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, and William Ewart Gladstone. Today, it houses the Royal Institute of International Affairs, a renowned think tank.
