Charles Rolls was a pioneering English motorist, aviator, and businessman best known as the co-founder of the iconic Rolls-Royce automobile company. Born in 1877 into a wealthy family, Rolls developed a keen interest in engines and motors from a young age. He studied mechanical engineering at Cambridge University before starting his career in the emerging automotive industry.

In 1904, Rolls met Henry Royce, a talented engineer who had recently started producing high-quality cars. Recognizing Royce’s exceptional abilities, Rolls agreed to sell Royce’s cars exclusively, leading to the formation of the Rolls-Royce company in 1906. The partnership combined Rolls’ business acumen and Royce’s technical expertise, resulting in some of the most luxurious and reliable automobiles of the early 20th century.

Rolls was also a passionate aviator, becoming the first Englishman to die in an aeronautical accident when his Wright Flyer crashed at an air show in 1910. Despite his tragic death at the age of 32, Rolls left an indelible mark on both the automotive and aviation industries. The plaque commemorating his life and work was erected in 2010 at 14/15 Conduit Street in the prestigious Mayfair district of Westminster, London, where Rolls worked from 1905 to 1910. This location, in the heart of London’s West End, is a fitting tribute to a man whose name has become synonymous with luxury, innovation, and excellence in engineering.
