Bernardo O’Higgins was a pivotal figure in the Chilean independence movement, serving as a general, statesman, and ultimately the liberator of Chile from Spanish rule in the early 19th century. Born in 1778 in Chile to an Irish father and a Chilean mother, O’Higgins spent much of his youth studying in London, England, including at a site near the location of this plaque at 2 The Vineyard in Richmond.

While in London, O’Higgins was exposed to Enlightenment ideas and met other South American revolutionaries, influencing his views on independence for Chile. He returned to Chile in 1802 and became involved in politics and the military. As a general in the Chilean Army, O’Higgins played a key role in the Chilean War of Independence, leading troops in several important victories against Spanish royalist forces between 1810-1818.

After Chile officially declared its independence in 1818, O’Higgins served as Supreme Director of Chile from 1818-1823, essentially serving as head of state. He enacted many reforms aimed at building an autonomous nation, including establishing trade relationships, the first Chilean navy, and promoting education. However, political opposition forced O’Higgins to resign and go into exile in Peru in 1823, where he lived until his death in 1842. Today, O’Higgins is remembered as one of Chile’s founding fathers and the “liberator of Chile.” This plaque in London marks an important place in the early life of this influential leader who helped shape the future of Chile and South America.
