Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, was a towering figure in 19th century British politics. Born in 1804 to Isaac D’Israeli, a renowned literary critic, Disraeli rose from humble origins to become one of the most influential statesmen of his era. He served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, first in 1868 and then again from 1874 to 1880.

Disraeli began his political career in 1837 as a Member of Parliament. Over the next four decades, he held various high offices including Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons. A gifted orator and shrewd political tactician, Disraeli played a pivotal role in shaping the modern Conservative Party. His rivalry with William Ewart Gladstone, leader of the Liberal Party, became legendary and defined British politics for a generation.

As Prime Minister, Disraeli left a lasting mark on both domestic and foreign policy. At home, he passed landmark social reforms aimed at improving living and working conditions for the British working class. Abroad, he was a staunch advocate of the British Empire, securing a controlling interest in the Suez Canal and having Queen Victoria proclaimed Empress of India. For his services to the nation, Disraeli was elevated to the peerage as Earl of Beaconsfield in 1876.

Disraeli spent his final years at 19 Curzon Street in Westminster, the borough at the heart of British government. He passed away here in 1881 at the age of 76. Even in death, Disraeli remained a revered national figure. His state funeral at Westminster Abbey and burial at Hughenden Manor were attended by thousands. Today, Disraeli is remembered as one of Britain’s greatest Prime Ministers, a leader who left an indelible mark on his nation and his era.
