Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934) was a renowned English playwright and a key figure in the development of British theatre during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known for his wit, social commentary, and masterful craftsmanship, Pinero helped elevate the status of theatre in his time.

Born in London, Pinero initially pursued a career in acting before transitioning to playwriting. He gained prominence with his 1885 farce “The Magistrate” and went on to write over 50 plays spanning various genres, from comedies to serious dramas. Some of his most famous works include “The Second Mrs. Tanqueray” (1893), “Trelawny of the ‘Wells'” (1898), and “The Gay Lord Quex” (1899).

Pinero’s plays often explored social issues and moral dilemmas, challenging Victorian conventions and showcasing his keen observation of human nature. His success and influence earned him a knighthood in 1909, making him the first playwright to receive this honor. From 1909 until his death in 1934, Sir Arthur Pinero resided at 115a Harley Street in the Borough of Westminster, London, as commemorated by this blue plaque erected in 1970.
