Sir Arthur Pearson was a renowned British newspaper publisher and philanthropist who lived from 1866 to 1921. He founded the St Dunstan’s charity, now known as Blind Veterans UK, which provides support and training for visually impaired ex-service personnel.

Pearson began his career in journalism, working for various newspapers before becoming the owner and publisher of the Daily Express in 1900. Under his leadership, the newspaper’s circulation soared, making it one of the most successful publications in Britain. Pearson was also a pioneer in the use of new printing technologies and marketing strategies.

In 1915, Pearson lost his eyesight due to glaucoma. Despite this setback, he remained active in public life and turned his attention to helping other blind people. He established St Dunstan’s in 1915, initially to provide rehabilitation and training for soldiers blinded during World War I. The organization grew rapidly and soon expanded its services to assist all visually impaired veterans. Pearson’s tireless work and dedication to the cause earned him widespread respect and admiration.

The building at 21 Portland Place, where this blue plaque is located, served as both Pearson’s residence and the headquarters of St Dunstan’s. The charity’s work continues to this day, with the organization now known as Blind Veterans UK. Pearson’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the ongoing support provided to visually impaired veterans by the organization he founded.
