Archibald Philip Primrose, known as the 5th Earl of Rosebery, was a prominent British statesman who served as Prime Minister from 1894 to 1895. Born on May 7, 1847 at 20 Charles Street in London’s fashionable Mayfair district, he was the son of Lord Dalmeny and his wife, Lady Catherine Stanhope.

Lord Rosebery had a distinguished political career. He first held office as Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department in 1881 and later served as Foreign Secretary from 1886 to 1892. In 1889, he became the first chairman of the newly formed London County Council. His tenure as Prime Minister, though brief, saw the passing of the Factory Act, a landmark in social reform that improved working conditions.

Outside of politics, Lord Rosebery was known as an avid collector, horse breeder, and sporting enthusiast. He owned several successful racehorses and served as President of the Jockey Club. He married Hannah de Rothschild, heiress to the wealthy Rothschild family, with whom he had four children. Sadly, Hannah died in 1890 at the young age of 39.

The plaque marking Lord Rosebery’s birthplace was erected in 1962 at 20 Charles Street in Mayfair, Westminster. This exclusive area has long been associated with Britain’s aristocracy and political elite. Nearby are the iconic Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace, London residence of the monarchy that Lord Rosebery served under as Prime Minister. His legacy as a Liberal statesman and social reformer is remembered to this day.
