Andrés Bello was a towering figure in 19th century Latin American culture and politics. Born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1781, Bello wore many hats throughout his illustrious life – he was a poet, educator, jurist, philologist, philosopher, and patriot.

In 1810, Bello spent time living here at 58 Grafton Way in London while serving as a diplomat for the newly independent Venezuelan government. During his stay in England, Bello immersed himself in studying philosophy, law, and philology. He was particularly influenced by the utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham.

Upon returning to South America, Bello made immense contributions to the development of law, government, and education in Chile, where he lived for several decades. As a senator and civil servant, he played a key role in drafting Chile’s civil code in 1855, which went on to be adopted by several other Latin American nations. Bello also founded the University of Chile and served as its first rector.

As a writer and thinker, Bello left a lasting mark through his scholarship on Spanish language and literature. His 1847 book, “Gramática de la lengua castellana destinada al uso de los americanos” was groundbreaking in its scientific approach to language. Bello’s poetry, while less well-known internationally, was hugely influential for later Latin American poets.

Andrés Bello’s legacy as a polymath and public intellectual looms large in Latin America to this day. This plaque, erected in 1996, pays tribute to Bello’s formative time spent living and studying here in London’s Bloomsbury neighborhood at the dawn of Venezuela’s independence – a crucial chapter in the life of a remarkable man.
