Andrea Dykes was one of three people tragically killed in the 1999 London nail bombings, a series of attacks targeting minority communities in the city. On April 30th, a neo-Nazi terrorist detonated a nail bomb at the Admiral Duncan pub on Old Compton Street in Soho, a popular gathering spot for the LGBTQ+ community. Andrea, who was pregnant at the time, had been enjoying an evening out at the pub with her friends and partner when the horrific attack occurred.

The senseless act of violence claimed the lives of Andrea and two of her friends, and left another 70 people injured, some with life-altering wounds from the nails and shrapnel. The bombing sent shockwaves through London’s gay community and the city as a whole.

Andrea was just 27 years old, with her whole life ahead of her. She was eagerly anticipating the birth of her child and all the joys of motherhood. Instead, her bright future was senselessly cut short by an act of unthinkable hatred and bigotry. This plaque serves as a somber memorial to Andrea and the other victims, ensuring that their lives are honored and remembered, and as a sobering reminder of the ongoing need to stand united against hate and terror in all its forms. The Admiral Duncan pub remains a resilient hub and haven for the LGBTQ+ community to this day, exemplifying London’s indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.
